Most portable generators spend the year in a garage or basement corner. Then a storm hits, and someone has to drag a 150-plus-pound machine outside in the dark, in the rain, while fumbling with cords. A generator storage box that lives on a pad outside means the generator is already where it needs to be.
What to look for
- Material that lasts outdoors. Aluminum won’t rust. Steel depends on its coating, and plastic can get brittle from UV and cold.
- Built-in ventilation so the generator can run inside with the vents open.
- Easy fuel access without lifting the whole box.
- A way to anchor it to concrete or pavers.
- The right size. Measure your generator with its handles and wheels.
Storage tips
- Use fuel stabilizer, or follow your manual’s guidance for long-term storage.
- Run the generator under light load once a month.
- Keep a battery maintainer on electric-start models if your setup allows it.
- Keep oil, a spare spark plug and a funnel in a dry spot nearby.
