The Generator Box

An aluminum portable generator enclosure you bolt down once and leave outside for good.

The Generator Box is a heavy .080″ aluminum enclosure that gives your portable generator a permanent home outside. Bolt it to a pad once and the generator stays there year-round, out of the rain and snow, locked up and ready to start when the power goes out.

Most people store a portable generator in the garage or basement, then have to drag 150-plus pounds of machine outside in the dark during a storm. The Generator Box ends that. The generator lives on its pad with its cords set up, and when you need it you lift the lid, fold out the side air windows and pull the cord.

What you get

  • Heavy .080″ aluminum construction. Thick aluminum plate holds its shape and resists dents, and it will never rust the way galvanized steel does.
  • White textured powder coat. The textured finish adds another layer of protection and hides the scuffs of everyday use. Custom colors are available and quoted separately.
  • Hinged lid. Lift it to refuel and reach the generator’s controls without pulling the generator out.
  • Fold-out louvered side air windows. They open for the ventilation and cooling air the generator needs while it runs, and they must be open any time it is running. We highly recommend adding a small fan to keep the unit from overheating — it isn’t required, but we recommend it.
  • Padlock-ready latch. Takes a standard padlock (padlock not included) so the lid stays shut and the generator stays yours.
  • Four-point lag-down base. Four mounting holes let you anchor the box to a concrete pad or pavers so wind can’t move it.
  • Fabricated in Connecticut. Cut, formed and finished by Microfab Company in Oxford, CT.

Will your generator fit?

The Generator Box holds most portable generators up to about 12,000 watts. The outside dimensions are 42″ W × 33″ D × 30″ H, and the usable space inside is slightly smaller, so measure your generator’s full length, width and height including the handles, wheels and any wheel kit, and leave room around it for airflow.

A Westinghouse iGen5000 fits with room to spare. A Predator 9500 inverter fits with roughly an inch of clearance on top. A DuroMax XP12000EH with its wheel kit squeezes in as a very tight fit.

How it arrives and how it goes in

  • Shipping: $150 flat rate by FedEx Ground to the lower 48 states. Ships within 5 business days and arrives in 10–15 business days. Alaska and Hawaii are quoted separately; call (203) 267-1000. The box weighs 85 lbs.
  • If it arrives damaged, take photos of the shipping box before you open it, note the damage on the delivery receipt and send the photos to us. We’ll replace any damaged panel at no cost.
  • Ventilation: open the side air windows before every start, and add a small fan. It isn’t required, but we highly recommend it to keep the unit from overheating.
  • Installation takes an afternoon: set it on a level concrete pad or compacted pavers outdoors, position the generator inside with the exhaust pointed away from the house, then drive masonry lag bolts through the four base holes. Read the full installation guide →

Safety first: run a portable generator outdoors only, never in a garage, basement or attached shed. The U.S. CPSC recommends keeping it at least 20 feet from the house with the exhaust pointed away from windows, doors and vents. Open the side air windows before every start and keep working carbon monoxide alarms inside your home. Read our safety guide →
