Where generator noise comes from
- Engine exhaust, usually the loudest part
- Mechanical noise from the engine and cooling fan
- Vibration carried into the ground or a deck
What helps
- Distance. Every time you double the distance from the generator, the sound level drops noticeably.
- Barriers. Any solid wall between the generator and the listener blocks direct sound.
- Direction. Point the exhaust away from the house and the neighbors.
- A solid base. A concrete pad transmits less vibration than a wood deck.
- The right generator. Inverter generators are much quieter than open-frame models of the same size.
The catch with “soundproof” boxes
Generators need a lot of air. Sealing one inside a box without enough ventilation leads to overheating, and it can trap exhaust. Sound-rated enclosures use baffled vents, acoustic liners and often fans to balance noise and airflow.
